We aim to encourage all pupils to develop their linguistic capabilities to the highest possible degree and to provide stimulating and enjoyable learning experiences, which may inspire pupils to continue their study of the language. German is chosen as an optional, supplementary language to French, or instead of French in Year 10 and GCSE level is attained in 3 years instead of 5.
Pupils move swiftly in one year through a broad selection of topics and attain a wide range of basic knowledge and confidence in the four skills: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.
As for French, pupils follow the CCEA specification. Pupils also have regular conversation classes with the German assistant.
The CCEA French specification is followed for AS level and pupils study a broad spectrum of contemporary themes which are tested through Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing modules and have further opportunities to develop their presentation skills.
The CCEA German specification is continued. Pupils study a wide range of contemporary issues and further develop their competence and fluency in the four skills. Literary texts are studied at A2 level and conversation classes with the German assistant are timetabled in both years.
Pupils are taught by specialist teachers in subject-specific classrooms. Access to ICT facilities enhances and encourages interactive learning. Pupils have regular timetabled classes with a native speaking Language Assistant to develop their oral and presentation skills
