Old Boys’ Association

The Belfast Royal Academy Old Boys’ Association was established in 1931 and its objectives are to promote fellowship among former pupils, to support the school and to maintain links with the Board of Governors, teachers and pupils.

Life membership is open to Old Boys who attended the Belfast Royal Academy and male members of the teaching staff. Presently, there is no fee to join the Association.

The Association is managed by a Committee under its President, officers and members who are elected annually and meet regularly during the year. See our website at www.braoba.com

Important events are held during the year to bring old boys together. The Annual Formal Dinner held in Belfast traditionally on the last Saturday in November is the main social function and this is supported by Dinners in London and Edinburgh in the spring.

Dates for forthcoming dinners are as follows:

Belfast Dinner - Saturday 25th November 2023

London Dinner - Friday 8th March 2024

Edinburgh Dinner - Friday 12th April 2024

Monthly informal lunches are held throughout the year in various golf clubs in the greater Belfast area. These serve as a great vehicle to meet old school friends and acquaintances and enjoy each other's company.

BRA Alumni Association - Business Breakfast Club Networking Events

The BRA Alumni Association invites you to join them at one of their Business Breakfast Club Meetings. These events are the perfect opportunity to meet up with colleagues and friends, network and make acquaintances and learn more about two local organisations. Attendees can mix and mingle from 8.00 a.m. before a full, hot, buffet breakfast and two short, lively speeches from fellow BRA alumni.

The annual cricket match against the school is held in June at The Castle Grounds.

Enquiries about the match may be directed to The School Development Office at 028 9074 0423 or by emailing developmentoffice@belfastroyalacademy.net

The Old Boys' Golf Society goes from strength to strength, holding 2 main competitions during the year. Firstly, the Picken Cup is contested at Malone Golf Club in June and Captain’s Day follows in September at Royal Belfast Golf Club. The Ferguson Trophy is presented for the best aggregate score over the two outings.

Support to the School

The Old Boys’ Association provides financial support for school projects. Recent support includes:

  • The JL Lord Memorial Plinth in the entrance of the Crombie Building.
  • Electron diffraction apparatus for use in the newly named James Stirling laboratory.
    6 Playground benches.
  • A contribution towards the cost of a video tower for hockey at the Roughfort playing fields.

Such financial support has been made possible through the Association’s fundraising efforts, the Annual Dinner, and contributions from individual old boys etc.
