Sport and exercise play an integral role in the educational and emotional experience we provide to pupils at Belfast Royal Academy and we are very proud of our rich sporting heritage. We provide an extensive sporting programme that has a positive influence on everyone, regardless of age, gender and ability - from aspiring sporting internationals to those who exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.
It is our aim to make the sporting experience the best we can for the hundreds of Academy pupils who play and enjoy sport at school. Whilst some will go on to represent the school, the province and indeed their country, for the majority, truly enjoyable participation is what matters most, and sporting experiences and memories made at school will stay with them for life. Pupils will learn the many transferable values of the sports that we embrace here, such as discipline, commitment and resilience, which they will be able to take with them into their academic work and all aspects of their adult life.
The School has an outstanding reputation for opportunity and excellence across a wide range of sports. Every year group enjoys a full afternoon of Games at the Roughfort playing fields weekly, as well as an additional session of PE. We are proud to be able to offer a huge variety of traditional sports including rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, athletics, rounders, cross-country running, badminton, tennis, table-tennis, basketball and swimming. In addition, pupils can also participate in golf, water polo, lifesaving and gymnastics.
The School enjoys the privilege of having over 21 acres of grounds at Roughfort Playing fields which hosts 6 rugby pitches, 2 synthetic cricket pitches and 3 cricket practice nets as well as a synthetic hockey pitch and additional gravel pitch and practice area. Roughfort also boasts athletics facilities with a long jump, high jump, hammer cage and shotput circle. The main School site has a dedicated Sports Centre, Gym, Fitness and conditioning Suite and 25 metre Swimming Pool and additional rugby and cricket pitches are located at the 12-acre Ben Madigan site, meaning we have plenty of space for pupils to undertake a wide range of sporting pursuits.
This combination of high quality facilities, an excellent team of committed staff and a focus on sport within both the timetable and extra-curricular activities ensures there are many prospects for sporting success. Pupils will find plenty of opportunities to meet their full sporting potential at the School through competitive fixtures, personal training and recreational sport.
