Spanish

Aims

We aim to promote an awareness of Spanish language and culture within the school. At the end of Form 2 pupils have the opportunity to choose to begin to study Spanish the following year in Form 3. We give a talk at the subject choice meeting for Form 2 to highlight the importance of Spanish as a world language. Those who opt to take Spanish in Form 3 can continue to GCSE and beyond, or may drop it at the end of the year.

Curriculum

  • In Form 3, we follow the Aventura Nueva Course
  • GCSE - Pupils follow the AQA, specification A. They take examinations in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The oral component is conducted by their teacher.
  • AS/A2 - We follow the CCEA Spanish specification. Pupils attend two conversations classes per week with the Spanish assistant.

At A2 the pupils study Spanish literature and cinema.

Links with Spain

  • In the past, trips have gone to Barcelona and Valencia, as well as a school exchange to Asturias, North-West Spain.  For further information and photographs from the latest exchange, please go to the Photo Gallery section of the website.
  • We have visited the George Best Belfast City Airport, which was formerly owned by the Spanish consortium, Ferrovial. They staged a business and Spanish insight day which proved very informative.
  • In the Sixth Form pupils attend a Study Day and also a Film Day at Q.U.B.
  • A number of our pupils continued their study of Spanish at university, including Oxford.
