ICT

Our Aim

The aims of the ICT Department are:
  • To equip all pupils with the necessary skills to enable them to make full use of ICT across the range of subjects.
  • To foster an interest in and enjoyment of all aspects of Information and Communication Technology.

Curriculum

  • Key Stage 3
All pupils in Forms 1 to 3 have one period per week of timetabled ICT. These classes are used to give the pupils a solid grounding in each of the main packages, e.g. Word Processing, Spreadsheets, DTP, Web Page Design and PowerPoint.
  • Key Stage 4
At present a small group of pupils are taking the CCEA Short Course GCSE in ICT. Pupils undertake a number of small coursework tasks which accounts for 60% of the course. The remaining 40% is accessed by a written examination.

·         AS/A2
The CCEA specification is followed.

AS

Pupils take one theory unit assessed by a written paper.  This accounts for 50% of the assessment.

The remaining 50% consists of 2 pieces of coursework

-          Design and build a website (25%).

-          A spreadsheet based piece of coursework (25%).

A2

Pupils take one theory unit which is 50% of the assessment. The remaining 50% consists of analysing and building a full database system.

Facilities and Resources
  • There are over 380 desktop PCs in the school. These are clustered in 10 ICT suites scattered throughout the school. There is also at least one computer in every classroom.
  • We have recently deployed 97 laptops with wireless access around the school.  These are kept in trolleys which can be wheeled from room to room as required.
  • There is large number of data projectors and interactive whiteboards throughout the school and we are continually seeking to add to these.

It is the policy of the ICT Department to seek to supplement the C2k allocation of equipment from our own resources and continually update the machines in use subject to budgetary constraints.
