ICT

Our Aim

The aims of the ICT Department are:
  • To equip all pupils with the necessary skills to enable them to make full use of ICT across the range of subjects.
  • To foster an interest in and enjoyment of all aspects of Information and Communication Technology.

Curriculum

  • Key Stage 3
All pupils in Forms 1 to 3 have one period per week of timetabled ICT. These classes are used to give the pupils a solid grounding in each of the main packages, e.g. Word Processing, Spreadsheets, DTP, Databases and PowerPoint.
  • Key Stage 4
All pupils in Forms 4 and 5 have one period of ICT for half a year. The aim of these classes is to build on the skills from Key Stage 3.

At present a small group of pupils are taking the CCEA Short Course GCSE in ICT. Pupils undertake a number of small coursework tasks which accounts for 60% of the course. The remaining 40% is accessed by a written examination.
  • AS/A2
    The CCEA specification is followed.

AS – Pupils take two theory units which in total form 70% of the assessment. The remaining 30% consists of a spreadsheet based piece of coursework completed in the second term.

A2 – Pupils take two theory units which in total form 70% of the assessment. The remaining 30% consists of analysing and building a full database system.

Facilities and Resources

  • There are over 250 desktop PCs in the school. These are clustered in 10 ICT suites scattered throughout the school. There is also at least one computer in every classroom.
  • The three Science Departments also have access to trolleys of laptops which can be wheeled from room to room for experimental work.
  • There is large number of data projectors throughout the school and we are continually seeking to add to these.

It is the policy of the ICT Department to seek to supplement the C2K allocation of equipment from our own resources and continually update the machines in use subject to budgetary constraints.
