Chemistry

Our Aims
  • To stimulate and maintain pupils’ curiosity, interest and enjoyment in Chemistry and be aware of its implications for the individual, the community and the environment
  • To encourage pupils to work independently and as part of a group
  • To enable pupils to be familiar with and use a body of chemical knowledge, principles and vocabulary
Curriculum

Key Stage 3
Chemistry is taught as a separate Science subject, by a specialist teacher, throughout Junior School. The variety of Reading, Writing and Audio-Visual activities is designed to build depth and width across the topics so that understanding and problem solving skills can be gained.

GCSE
Pupils follow the CCEA specification. Approximately 60% choose to study Chemistry as part of the Triple Award option. The remainder follow the Double Award Science specification. Coursework is worth 25% of the total examination mark.

AS/A2
We regularly have 90 pupils studying Chemistry at AS level with approximately 80% of these progressing to A2 level.

Facilities and Resources
All of our five laboratories have been recently refurbished and have interactive whiteboards and internet terminals enabling pupils to access on-line resources.

Pupil Destination
The majority of our pupils progress to tertiary education to study at a wide range of universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. Courses include:
  • Medicine
  • Dentistry
  • Pharmacy
  • Veterinary Science
  • Food Science
  • Chemical Engineering, to name but a few
